The Finnish Patient Insurance Centre handles compensation claims for patient injuries that occur in Finland. A patient injury can be for example treatment injury, equipment-related injury, infection injury, inappropriate treatment etc.
The Patient Insurance covers extra costs and losses caused by the patient injury. Insignificant injuries are however not compensated for.
The National Supervising Authority for Welfare and Health Valvira supervises and guides healthcare professionals and medical facilities in Finland. Valvira handles complaints concerning suspicion of maltreatment resulting in death or severe handicap. The Regional State Administrative Agencies handle other types of complaints.
