This year we have chosen to highlight loss prevention from a sustainable perspective. A loss, whether to the ship, the crew or passengers or to the environment, puts great strain on economic, human and environmental resources. A successful loss prevention strategy is a crucial waypoint along the fairway to truly sustainable shipping.

We will begin our afternoon seminar with a presentation of and by Alandia’s loss prevention team, Martti Simojoki and Johanna Kull, on how Alandia assists its customers by analyzing claims statistics, communicating the findings and by customizing loss prevention programs.

After that we are honored and delighted to introduce our guest speakers Cecilia Österman, Per Tunell and Lasse Johansson who will present sustainability from the perspective of their areas of expertise.

Human Element in Sustainable Shipping - Cecilia Österman, LInnaeus University

Cecilia ÖstmanCecilia Österman holds a position as Senior Lecturer in Maritime Science at Linnaeus University in Sweden, and a PhD in Shipping and Marine Technology. She has a background in marine engineering and previous work experience includes 12 years at sea in the Swedish merchant navy, and work at a naval shipyard. Cecilia’s research focus is safe and socially sustainable maritime operations, designing technical and organizational systems to fit human abilities and limitations.

Leading the Way towards Truly Sustainable Shipping - Per Tunell, Wallenius Marine

Per Tunell is a Naval Architect with more than 20 years in the shipping industry. He has been working as a ship surveyor, a project manager of several newbuildings, Head of Environmental Management at Wallenius Marine and is now the Chief Operating Officer and overall responsible for the operation of Wallenius shipping activities.

Per Tunell have been speaking about Wallenius Marine vision: “Leading the way towards truly sustainable shipping” all over the world, and how that vision have led to concrete results. Today, Wallenius Marine are using big data and lean processes to ensure energy efficiency, have a highly skilled crew with a strong environmental engagement and Wallenius Marine is now also designing a new vessel with wind as main propulsion.

Climate Change and its Effect on Shipping - Lasse Johansson, SMHI

Lasse Johansson is, as senior consultant at SMHI, specialized in oceanography and meteorology for applications in areas of construction, insurance and environmental assessment. He has a focus in joining statistical methods with the marine sciences to improve risk and likelihood assessments and is also pursuing projects to facilitate the communication between producers of this type of information and the receivers of it. The ongoing climate change challenges scientific thinking as well as the statistical methods available and our understanding of risk. These questions are a rapidly growing part of his day-to-day work.

Alandia’s seminar which will be held in the main auditorium of Alandica is open to all interested. Our clients and partners will receive an invitation early February to register for the entire event and networking. For more information contact
